The Monk House
This house in west Boulder is hidden beyond 4th Street, and when we began it was neglected and messy. The exterior entry, for one, was virtually non-existent, hidden, and riddled with rocks, puddles, and detritus. The bones of the structure are strong, however, and the geometries - Japanese influenced tatami-scale structural frames and trims - could not be denied. We advised to lean into the strong character of the house. Our interventions are meant to strengthen the home’s strong personality. Chief among them are the vertical screen elements and cascading deck steps and planters at the main entry. Finally this house has an entry sequence worthy of the structure! We also designed a ‘floating’ main bath area behind the bed headwall and dropped the kitchen directly into the formal living space (formerly the kitchen was buried in the basement). Evoke provided a killer landscape on this project!
