New Lands

Tucked under a big beautiful chestnut tree, New Lands is a house that walks the modern slash traditional line. Here’s how we split the difference when our clients ask us for a modern house with traditional winks and nods. Built in a neighborhood that was once an orchard, the design seeks to be a similarly protected and shady respite. Natural materials with feel and texture - wood, board formed concrete - make up most of the exterior skin. Large steel window sets invite the outdoors in. Chimneys set the house in place, marking a vertical anchor on the horizon line. The material palette continues inside with wood structural ceilings, board formed concrete fireplaces. Tucked in niches, hidden beds, and reading nooks set the balance with modern open gathering spaces and family rooms.
